Procol Harum’s Song Moves Elders, Sparks Hope For Future

Procol Harum’s timeless track, “A Whiter Shade of Pale,” has enchanted audiences globally and soared to new heights when performed with the Danish National Concert Orchestra and Choir at Ledreborg Castle, Denmark. Gary Brooker, the band’s frontman, revealed the song drew inspiration from Johann Sebastian Bach’s Suite No. 3 in D Major, adding a layer of tribute to the August 2006 concert.

This collaboration produced an impressive 15-song performance, which was later released as a live album. The orchestra’s captivating introduction beautifully set the stage for “A Whiter Shade of Pale,” with Brooker’s vocals entering after 90 seconds, echoing the distinct charm of the 1967 original. This rendition captivated the online audience, accumulating nearly 99 million views on YouTube.

Teaming up with the Danish National Concert Orchestra proved to be a masterstroke for Procol Harum, enriching the classical foundations of their sound. The orchestra intensified the emotional depth of the song, while the choir’s harmonious vocals lifted the overall performance.

The audience response was exceptionally positive, with many declaring this version as the definitive rendition of the song. “A Salty Dog” also shone, with the choir’s poignant addition to the well-known piano introduction further enhancing the performance.

“A Whiter Shade of Pale” remains a monumental achievement for Procol Harum, leading international charts and selling over 10 million copies since its first release on May 12, 1967. Its enigmatic lyrics and evocative imagery perfectly captured the spirit of the 1967 Summer of Love, affirming its status as a classic.

Originally, the track did not acknowledge Matthew Fisher as a co-writer, but a 2009 court ruling rectified this, crediting him for his contribution. Keith Reid, the lyricist, has stated that the song’s influences stemmed more from literature than personal experiences.

Procol Harum invites both long-standing fans and newcomers to delve into their rich music catalogue. The band’s official online channels, including their YouTube channel and Facebook page, serve as portals to their distinct fusion of classical and rock elements, offering a truly unique musical journey.
